Airwallex is the AI-native financial operating system for a real-time, intelligent economy. More than 675,000 businesses, including McLaren Racing, Qantas, SHEIN, and TikTok, use us, directly or through our platform partners, to run their financial operations or build and monetize financial products of their own.
We started in Melbourne in 2015 to build the infrastructure global commerce runs on. We're the regulated backbone behind global payments: not by accident, but by design. A decade plus, 85+ licenses, and a financial infrastructure spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
We're co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore, with more than 2,300 people across 27 offices. We hire builders with founder-level energy, people who move fast with good judgment, dig in with real curiosity, and make calls from first principles rather than waiting to be told what to do. Read our operating principles to see it in full.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll architect, design, and build secure, scalable systems that power Airwallex’s lending platform and enable fast, seamless, and compliant credit experiences. You’ll own the technical direction of robust lending services, APIs, and distributed systems that support enterprise clients embedding credit products into their own offerings.
Lead design reviews, shape systems architecture, and mentor engineers while raising the bar for code quality, technical excellence, and engineering practices.
Build resilient, high-throughput services that perform reliably at global enterprise scale, supported by strong testing, observability, monitoring, and operational discipline.
Partner with Product, Risk, Compliance, and other engineering teams to evolve the platform and support expansion into new financing products.
Own the technical foundations that enable secure, scalable lending services and APIs for enterprise clients and their users.
This is an in-office role — you’ll be in our Singapore office five days a week.
A bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
7+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, including modern engineering practices, continuous integration, and quality engineering.
At least 2 years in a technical leadership role, mentoring engineers and leading the definition and execution of engineering strategy.
Strong computer science fundamentals and object-oriented programming skills, with proven experience building backend systems.
Strong experience with Java or Kotlin and the Spring or Spring Boot framework, or comparable backend technologies.
Extensive experience designing and building RESTful APIs, with a solid understanding of modern API design principles and tools.
Experience with domain-driven design and event-driven architectures in production environments.
A proven track record designing and maintaining high-throughput, low-latency, highly available distributed systems at scale.
Cloud experience with GCP or AWS, plus Docker and Kubernetes.
Familiarity with observability tooling such as Splunk, Grafana, or Prometheus.
Experience in financial services, lending, payments, or credit products.
Experience building SaaS products offered as a platform.
You're comfortable owning the roadmap yourself.
You own the outcome and you don't wait for permission to fix what's broken.
You're comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and moving quickly anyway.
You hold yourself to a high standard even when no one is watching. Quality and accountability aren't external expectations, they're internal ones.
You value in-person collaboration and are happy being in the office five days a week.

We own the end-to-end credit platform: the backend systems, risk engines, and integrations that power business credit products and embedded financing. The challenge is balancing speed with safety, building resilient, high-throughput services that assess creditworthiness in real time, orchestrate fund flows seamlessly, and scale reliably across global markets. This is a team for product-minded engineers who want ownership and enjoy solving complex technical problems. If you want to help redefine the financial infrastructure that lets businesses around the world grow, this is where that work happens.
