Airwallex is the AI-native financial operating system for a real-time, intelligent economy. More than 675,000 businesses, including McLaren Racing, Qantas, SHEIN, and TikTok, use us, directly or through our platform partners, to run their financial operations or build and monetize financial products of their own.
We started in Melbourne in 2015 to build the infrastructure global commerce runs on. We're the regulated backbone behind global payments: not by accident, but by design. A decade plus, 85+ licenses, and a financial infrastructure spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
We're co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore, with more than 2,300 people across 27 offices. We hire builders with founder-level energy, people who move fast with good judgment, dig in with real curiosity, and make calls from first principles rather than waiting to be told what to do. Read our operating principles to see it in full.
Our Growth Team sits at the heart of Airwallex’s mission, focusing on user acquisition and strategic market expansion. We leverage data and cutting-edge technologies to craft seamless, intuitive experiences that help millions of users discover, engage with, and benefit from our products.
From new-user funnels to onboarding optimizations, our Growth team is all about experimentation, rapid iteration, and driving sustainable business impact. Whether it’s designing scalable architectures for high-traffic pages, building robust A/B testing frameworks, or integrating global marketing platforms, the Growth team’s contributions directly shape how we attract and retain customers worldwide.
Joining the Growth team means you’ll have a front-row seat to the most crucial stage of our product lifecycle and play a pivotal role in fueling the next wave of our global expansion.
As a Backend Engineer within the Growth team, you will architect, develop, and maintain scalable microservices and backend systems powering our growth initiatives. You will enable experimentation and data-driven decision-making, collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, and drive robust, secure, and high-performing technical solutions that support our global user acquisition and engagement strategies.
This role is based in San Francisco.
Architect, develop, and maintain microservices in Java/Kotlin (or similar languages), ensuring high-traffic, high-availability systems meet global user demands.
Implement best practices for service-to-service communication, orchestration, and fault tolerance.
Collaborate with data scientists and product managers to design data pipelines, analytics platforms, and event-driven architectures.
Ensure Growth data is accurate, reliable, and easily accessible for key decisions.
Translate business requirements into scalable backend solutions by working closely with Frontend, Product, Design, and Marketing teams.
Participate in architectural reviews, code reviews, and strategy sessions to continually improve backend service quality and performance.
Develop services that support rapid A/B testing, feature toggles, and real-time performance monitoring; continuously improve backend functionalities to enhance user engagement and drive conversions.
Integrate secure coding practices and frameworks to protect user data and ensure global regulatory compliance. Proactively address potential vulnerabilities and security risks.
We’re looking for people who meet the minimum qualifications for this role. The preferred qualifications are great to have, but are not mandatory.
