About Mercari
Circulate all forms of value to unleash the potential in all people
"What can I do to help society thrive with the finite resources we have?" The Mercari marketplace app was born in 2013 out of this thought by our founder Shintaro Yamada as he traveled the world. We believe that by circulating all forms of value, not just physical things and money, we can create opportunities for anyone to realize their dreams and contribute to society and the people around them. Mercari aims to use technology to connect people all over the world and create a world where anyone can unleash their potential. For more information about Mercari Group’s mission, see Mercari’s Culture Doc
Organization/Team Mission

These principles ultimately help us achieve Mercari’s mission by defining the ideal state we seek to realize in the long term.
- Passion For The Product
- Grow Together
- Solve Through Mechanisms
- Collaborate Openly

Merpay Credit Modeling team's mission is to "create a credit business that delivers value to everyone using high-quality data science and machine learning technology." Under this mission, we handle everything from identifying business challenges to model construction, development, and operations.
As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer, you will contribute to the architectural design and implementation of next-generation credit models, while also developing and operating proprietary credit models using Mercari/Merpay data.
See here for more information about our mission and values.
Work Responsibilities
- Contribute to business growth through the development, operation, and improvement of credit models:
- Planning: Identifying issues, verbalizing them, and proposing solutions.
- Evaluation Design: Designing evaluations that include not only offline metrics but also key business KPIs, risk metrics, and UX.
- Operational Design: Designing SLOs/operations, including detection of drift, model performance degradation, and bugs, through to permanent resolutions.
- Technical Decision-Making: Determining modeling strategies (interpretability vs. performance, online/batch, real-time requirements, boundaries with rule-based systems, etc.).
- Model Construction: Design and implementation including data analysis, feature engineering, design and implementation of ML models for tabular data, maintenance of inference/training pipelines, ensuring reproducibility, experiment management, and model quality assurance.
- Leading consensus-building and collaboration involving stakeholders in product, business, legal, and compliance.
- Exploring and developing next-generation credit models.
- Providing technical mentoring to team members.
Unique Challenges
- AI credit at scale: Mercari’s ecosystem (23M+ MAU) provides a rare environment to create AI-driven credit from user behavior and to build the foundation for unprecedented financial services at scale.
- Financial inclusion: By leveraging data and machine learning, the work challenges how credit is defined and delivered – expanding responsible access to credit and financial services for people who have historically been underserved, and advancing financial inclusion at scale.
- High-stakes quality bar: Because financial services demand strong social responsibility, the work extends beyond model accuracy to include UX, reliability, monitoring, and overall product quality—resulting in experiences that are accessible and usable for a wide range of users.
- End-to-end ownership: The position involves full-cycle ownership, from problem discovery and proposal through design, implementation, deployment, and iteration of entirely new credit and model architectures, working across functions and roles.
