Senior Full Stack Engineer

College Board – Technology

Location: This is a remote role. Candidates who live near CB offices have the option of being fully remote or hybrid (Tuesday and Wednesday in office). All CB employees are required to occasionally travel to meet in person for business purposes.

Role Type: This is a full-time position.

About Technology at College Board:

We are a mission-driven engineering team building and evolving the technology that powers and protects the future of learning. Our systems support highly trusted education programs used by millions of students each year, operating at significant scale and public responsibility. Today, we are focused on designing and delivering a critical new initiative that extends our platform in meaningful ways: blending foundational system work with thoughtful experimentation as we adapt to emerging technologies and new learner needs. We combine modern, cloud-native engineering practices with years of platform modernization, security hardening, and large-scale digital delivery, operating as an experiment factory that tests assumptions and iterates based on evidence rather than tradition. What makes this team distinct is the rare combination of meaningful public impact, platform-scale technical challenges, and the freedom to shape how mission-critical systems are built and evolved.

About the Team

The Deliver team is responsible for building and operating the core products that deliver high-stakes digital assessments to millions of students each year. Today, this includes supporting flagship programs such as the SAT and AP exams, while advancing the technology that enables secure, reliable, and scalable test delivery across a wide range of devices and environments. The team focuses on delivering high-integrity proctoring and assessment experiences, ensuring performance, security, and consistency for students and educators at scale.

Our responsibilities span two primary domains:

We own the end-to-end student testing experience, including:

• Bluebook – the student-facing desktop application used to take digital exams
• Mission Control – a large-scale, AWS-based backend that supports authentication, test delivery, telemetry, resilience, and security
• Test & Results Packaging – systems that ingest, digitize, secure, package, and deliver test content to students through the Bluebook client

Together, these systems must operate with extreme reliability, security, and performance at national scale. We also build the tools educators rely on during live testing, a new product consisting of desktop and mobile experiences that allow proctors to:

• Monitor student progress in real time
• Detect and investigate anomalies
• Troubleshoot student issues on test day

This work directly impacts test integrity, educator confidence, and student outcomes.

About the Opportunity

As a Senior Full Stack Engineer in Deliver team, you will play a key role in building and delivering web applications and cloud services that power College Board’s next generation digital experiences. You will develop scalable, performant, and reliable solutions, contributing to design, implementation, testing, and technical documentation, while working closely with cross-functional teams.

College Board, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to expanding access to education, builds technology that serves students, educators, and institutions at scale. Working within the Technology group and in partnership with product, design, and operations teams, the Senior Full Stack Engineer will develop solutions that are fast, fault-tolerant, and easy to maintain.

This role requires strong expertise in modern full stack development (React, TypeScript, and Node.js), along with experience building serverless and container-based applications on AWS. You will build user-facing features and back-end services that perform consistently as usage grows.

The ideal candidate is comfortable working with serverless and event-driven architectures and enjoys integrating front-end experiences with cloud services. You will contribute to systems built on modular, scalable architectures, and support delivery through CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and modern DevOps practices.

In this role, you have:

Design and Development (60%)

• Design and deliver high-quality user-facing features and back-end services using React, TypeScript, Node.js, and AWS, with a focus on scalability and reliability
• Translate product requirements into well-structured, testable components, driving features from concept to production
• Build and maintain infrastructure as code (IaC) using AWS CDK
• Prototype and validate new ideas quickly while keeping codebases clean and extensible
• Contribute to shared patterns, components, and documentation to improve consistency and reuse
• Optimize application performance, reliability, and security

Team Operations & Success (30%)

• Collaborate in Agile teams, contributing to sprint planning, execution, and delivery
• Participate in code reviews and design discussions, helping maintain strong engineering standards
• Partner with product, design, and platform teams to deliver reliable user experiences
• Write and maintain automated tests using Playwright
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues
• Follow established CI/CD, testing, and DevOps practices to ship high-quality code quickly

Learning & Sharing (10%)

• Stay current with web technologies, AWS services, and secure application design
• Build a solid understanding of our customers’ business processes and operations
• Share knowledge and contribute to improving team practices and engineering quality
• Mentor junior developers and support growth within the team

About you, you have:

• 7+ years of experience in full stack development, building, testing, and managing web-based applications
• At least 3 years of recent, hands-on experience with React, TypeScript, Node.js, and AWS
• Experience building serverless applications on AWS, including services such as Lambda, API Gateway, SNS, SQS, EventBridge, S3, Step Functions, IAM, CloudFront, WAF, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, and DynamoDB
• Experience building applications using modular, component-driven architectures
• Experience with AWS CDK to define infrastructure as code and integrate it into deployment pipelines for environment-specific deploys
• Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions, including reusable workflows shared across services, improving consistency and reducing duplicated pipeline maintenance across teams
• Experience with automated testing, ideally Playwright
• Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools (e.g., CloudWatch, Grafana) including metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerting to diagnose and resolve production issues
• Experience working in Agile environments with strong collaboration skills
• Strong problem-solving ability, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies
• Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in computer science, systems engineering, information systems, or a similar field (preferred)

All roles at College Board require:

• A passion for expanding educational and career opportunities and mission-driven work
• Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging technologies, with a willingness to experiment with and adopt new AI-driven solutions and comfort with learning and applying new digital tools independently and proactively.
• Clear and concise communication skills, written and verbal
• A learner's mindset and a commitment to growth: welcoming diverse perspectives, giving and receiving timely, respectful feedback, and continuously improving through iterative learning and user input.
• A drive for impact and excellence: solving complex problems, making data-informed decisions, prioritizing what matters most, and continuously improving through learning, user input, and external benchmarking.
• A collaborative and empathetic approach: working across differences, fostering trust, and contributing to a culture of shared success
• Authorization to work in the United States
