Lead QA Developer

Bug Squisher Wanted: You’re an expert at making sure websites, storefronts, and backend systems work smoothly before they go live. But you don’t just catch bugs. You build the systems that catch bugs before anyone else ever sees them. You can spot flaky tests from a mile away. Your test architecture is clean, scalable, and easy for other developers to follow. And when it comes to troubleshooting, you’re relentless — in the best possible way.

If this sounds like you, and you’re excited about a workday that’s fun, collaborative, technical, and full of purpose, let’s chat!

AlgaeCal is on the lookout for a Lead QA Developer to bring their skills to our lively QA team and help transform lives, one stable release at a time.

Small print here ⇒ We’re an eCommerce company. So, we want you to have eCommerce experience. Lots of it. You’ll be helping us improve the quality, stability, and reliability of our React-based storefront and internal middleware. So if automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and digital marketing technology don’t light at least a small fire in your belly, you probably shouldn’t read any further.

Still here? Okay then…

This job will give you ALL the feels:

At AlgaeCal, we’re driven by a single idea. To end the fear of bone loss. In the United States, an estimated 54 million people have low bone density.

The good news? AlgaeCal has the world’s only clinically-backed natural solution to this problem. We give hope to everyone worried about bone loss. If that excites you, you’ll find no better place to continue your career than at AlgaeCal.

You’ll love it here:

• You’ll be working with a great team. The developers at AlgaeCal have been there, done that, and got the t-shirt. They’ve written more code than Alan Turing. They’ve learned more programming languages than C3PO. They’ve immersed themselves in so many development tasks that they’ve had to be pulled out of the Matrix by their ankles on a Friday evening. And the best part? They’re friendly, funny, and easy to work with.
• You’ll use your powers for good. This isn’t one of those jobs that crush your soul with mindless tasks. On the contrary! You’ll help build the quality engineering systems that let us ship better storefront experiences, stronger middleware, and more reliable eCommerce platforms — all so we can spread a powerful message: bone loss is beatable.
• You won’t be micromanaged. We’ll give you a clear set of KPIs, meaningful ownership, and crystal clear expectations. You’ll know what success looks like: stronger automation frameworks, cleaner CI/CD integration, fewer flaky tests, better reporting, and fewer defects slipping through to production.
• We don’t have mattresses at the office. Seriously Elon, what’s up with that?!? You’ll be relieved to know this isn’t one of those Silicon Valley gigs that expects you to work ridiculously long hours and frowns upon family time. We’re not like that! We enjoy our life, and we want you to enjoy yours too.

This job might be for you if you’ve got…

• 5+ years of QA development experience, with real examples of automated testing strategies you’ve built, maintained, improved, or scaled.
• 2+ years of leadership, mentorship, or coaching experience. You don’t need a giant ego or a fancy title. But you do need to know how to guide other QA developers, review their work, support their growth, and raise the technical standard of the team.
• A strong command of JavaScript and TypeScript. You don’t need to speak in code at dinner parties, (in fact, please don’t), but you should be very comfortable writing, reviewing, and improving automated tests in a modern JS/TS environment.
• Hands-on experience with automated testing frameworks like Cypress, Playwright, or similar tools. If you’ve ever made a flaky test suite faster, cleaner, and more reliable, we’d love to hear about it.
• The know-how to architect, optimize, and scale automated testing frameworks across frontend storefronts and backend middleware. Around here, that means working across our Shopify Hydrogen storefront and middleware
• Experience integrating automated tests into cloud-based CI/CD pipelines. You understand that automation is only useful if it gives developers fast, reliable feedback, and doesn’t randomly blow up the build because someone sneezed near the test runner.
• A sharp eye for quality metrics. We’re talking automation coverage, pipeline stability, test execution runtimes, flaky test reduction, production defect leakage, and the kind of reporting that helps the whole team make better decisions.
• Comfort with specialized QA spaces like API contract testing, performance profiling, load testing, and browser developer tool profiling. You don’t have to know everything. But you do need to be curious, technical, and willing to dig. We’d also be impressed if you’ve worked with Python, PHP, Figma, Storybook, or Jest.
• Next level bug prevention skills. In fact, you’re so good at dealing with bugs you should probably be deployed on a mission to Klendathu.

Now, time to be honest: is this really you?

If you’re nodding your head and feeling that flutter of excitement, then we can’t wait to meet you.

Other Qualities You’ll Need

At AlgaeCal, we’re going to insist that you have these 3 qualities:

• You’re humble — you put the team and others’ needs ahead of your own
• You’re hungry to learn more
• You’re people smart — in the sense that you’re a great teammate

The truth is, if you don’t have these qualities, you won’t last long at AlgaeCal. So if you’re missing one of them, be honest. Save yourself a lot of headaches and skip to a job posting that is a better fit for you.

What Will You Earn?

We believe in rewarding top talent. Let’s talk about salary once we’ve had the chance to get to know you better. Rest assured, we’re generous and offer above-market pay for the right person. If you bring the skills and experience, we’ll make sure the compensation reflects that.

You’ll also enjoy the following benefits:

• A generous healthcare package
• Monthly team events and activities
• Flexible Stat Holidays with the option to bank days for later use
• Casual dress code

And above all, you’ll join a team that you’ll never want to leave. Culture is everything to us. Yes, we work extremely hard to change as many people’s lives as possible. But we know how to have fun and reward ourselves too.
