At Zego, we're on a mission to do the good thing, not the insurance thing.
Insurance hasn't changed much in over a century. The way we live, work and travel has. We're building the real-time, AI-driven infrastructure that powers innovative insurance, so good drivers get cover that works the way they actually drive.
We're not just updating insurance; We're leading the AI evolution in insurance 🤖
For us, AI isn't a line on a roadmap or a buzzword on a slide. It's our operating reality, and it's how we build products that back drivers instead of the old insurance playbook.
We don't do things slowly, and we don't do bureaucracy. We back high-performance builders who want ownership, early responsibility and the chance to do the most career-defining work of their lives. You'll get the space to try things, the tools to move fast, and the room to see your ideas reach millions of drivers.
Do not take our word for it. Read what Zegons say about us on Glassdoor.
If you're ready to build the future of insurance, we're hiring.
Purpose of the role
As Head of Pricing - Insurance at Zego, you will lead the insurer’s technical view of the models that drive our pricing. That covers the actuarial risk models behind our net rates, the demand and market models, and any other predictive model used for pricing and underwriting decisions. The models are built by the MGA pricing teams using a mix of traditional techniques (GLM, GAM, GBM) as well as new AI driven approaches.
Your role is to make sure that we, as the insurer, can form an actuarial view on all of them, validate what sits underneath, and stand behind the rates it carries. On the actuarial risk models you will go further still, joining those projects from the start and owning the independent validation end to end.
You will do this as the senior technical voice in a small actuarial team, which brings real breadth alongside the depth. Alongside the models you will review pricing and underwriting proposals across both personal and commercial motor in close collaboration with our underwriting team, and you will bring the modelling view into portfolio management.
You will work directly with the MGA pricing teams, with underwriting and with our co-insurance partners, with access to senior leadership and to decision making from the first week.
What you will be working on
Lead the insurer’s technical view across the full model landscape: the actuarial risk models, the demand models, the market and optimisation models. For each one the questions are the same: is the approach sound, can the output be trusted, and are we using it the way we intend to.
Bring an actuarial view to all modelling approaches including AI driven models. Methods move quickly, you need to keep up.
Go deeper on the actuarial risk models that set our net rates: join each project, independently validate the modelling decisions, the rating factor choices and the assumptions applied, and evidence the basis for each.
Review, validate and challenge pricing and underwriting proposals across personal and commercial lines, working closely with our underwriting team: tactical pricing changes, full model updates, optimisation algorithms, new underwriting rules and renewal capping.
Contribute to portfolio management and portfolio insight: what the KPIs are telling us, what is driving the movements, and what the modelling view says about where performance is heading.
Support the insurer’s position with our co-insurance partners on the net rates, the quality of the models behind them and the validation we have carried out.
Mentor and coach junior actuarial colleagues.
Help build the processes, the governance and the tooling, including AI, that allow a small and senior team to work faster and more robustly.
What you will need to be successful in the role
A qualified actuary, or an equivalent track record inside an actuarial pricing team, with at least ten years of hands-on modelling experience.
Deep experience of classic actuarial risk modelling: GLMs built in Emblem, Akur8 or equivalent, with Python used in practice rather than in principle.
Real exposure to the newer modelling approaches alongside the classic ones, such as GBMs and other machine learning methods, and the confidence to form an actuarial view on a method you have not built yourself.
Experience with UK motor pricing. Experience with other lines of business is an advantage.
Experience with newly launched portfolios, or portfolios with limited history.
Experience with telematics products and their pricing.
The judgement to say whether a model can be trusted, backed by having seen models work and seen them fail.
Comfort in a small team with high influence and direct access to decision making, and a genuine interest in developing a less experienced colleague.
Teams work better with time to collaborate and space to get things done. We call it Zego Hybrid: some of us are in our office (central London or Halifax) weekly, others monthly or quarterly. It's about finding the balance between face time and focus that produces great work and a healthy life around it.
We also make a point of getting everyone in the same room. Teams come together every quarter, and once a year the whole company does, properly. It's a serious investment and consistently one of the best parts of the year.
Here is what the last one looked like.
