Fake job offers are one of the fastest-growing scams in every country. Generative tools let scammers write a warm, perfect listing in seconds, copy a real company's branding, and hold a fluent chat in any language. And not every listing on a job board is a real, open vacancy.
The good news: scams still follow a small number of patterns, because they all need the same thing from you — money, documents or account access.
The eight red flags
1. Any fee. Registration, training, kit, security deposit, 'processing'. Real employers never charge candidates. This single rule catches most scams.
2. Recruitment on Telegram or WhatsApp only. Companies hire through their careers site and company email.
3. A free email address. hr.amazon.jobs@gmail.com is not Amazon. Check the domain after the @ against the company's website.
4. No interview, or an 'interview' that is a chat. Real roles have a call with a named person.
5. Pay that is too good, especially 'daily payouts' for simple tasks like rating products or liking videos. That is the task scam, and the money you 'earn' is bait for a deposit.
6. Pressure: urgent, limited seats, join today.
7. Requests for ID documents, bank details or OTPs before a written offer.
8. A link shortener or a throwaway domain (.xyz, .top, .online).
How to confirm a real job in two minutes
Search the company's own careers page for the same title. If it is not there, ask the recruiter for the link to it.
Search the recruiter's name together with the company name. Real recruiters have a visible history.
Paste the message into our scam checker. It scans for every pattern above and tells you whether others have reported the same contact.
If you already paid or shared documents
Contact your bank immediately and ask them to reverse or block the transfer. Report the number and link to your national cybercrime portal (in India, cybercrime.gov.in or 1930). Change passwords for any account you shared, and if you sent ID documents, tell the issuing authority so they can flag misuse.
Questions people ask
Do legitimate companies ever ask for a security deposit?
No. Any request for a deposit, fee or purchase to start a job is a scam, without exception.
Is a WhatsApp message from a recruiter always fake?
Not always — some recruiters follow up on WhatsApp after email contact. It is a red flag when the entire process happens there and there is no company email or careers-page listing.
Can a job offer with a real company name still be fake?
Yes. Scammers copy real brands constantly. Verify through the company's own website, never through links in the message.
