Working remotely for a company in another country is now a realistic goal for many people in India, especially in tech, design, marketing, support, finance and operations. It's also a crowded space with plenty of confusing advice and outright scams. This post explains how remote international hiring actually works, which jobs are realistic, and how to compete well.
First, understand 'remote' on a listing
Remote rarely means 'anywhere in the world'. Most remote roles are limited to certain countries or time zones, because the employer must handle tax, payroll and employment law wherever you live. Look for wording like:
- 'Remote (India)' or 'Remote, APAC': open to you.
- 'Remote, US only' or 'Remote (UK)': usually not open to you, however good the match. Applying wastes your time.
- 'Remote, anywhere' or 'globally distributed': open in principle, but read the details, because some exclude certain countries.
- 'Hybrid' or 'remote-first with office in Bengaluru': you'll be expected near that office some of the time.
How foreign companies employ people in India
There are three common arrangements. Knowing which one you're offered helps you compare offers and ask the right questions.
- Through an Indian entity. The company has its own subsidiary in India and employs you like any local employer, with local payroll and benefits.
- Through an employer of record (EOR). A third-party company legally employs you in India on the foreign company's behalf and handles payroll, tax deductions and statutory benefits. You work for the foreign company day to day.
- As an independent contractor. You invoice the company, often in foreign currency, and handle your own tax. This is flexible but comes with fewer protections and benefits, and you're responsible for compliance.
Roles that are commonly hired remotely
- Software engineering, QA, DevOps and data engineering.
- Data analysis, machine learning and AI-related roles.
- Product design, UX and graphic design.
- Digital marketing, content, SEO and marketing operations.
- Customer support and customer success, often with shift work to match other time zones.
- Finance, bookkeeping, payroll and operations support.
- Recruiting and sourcing.
What international remote employers look for
- Strong written communication. Remote teams run on writing: clear updates, documentation and messages. Your application is your first writing sample.
- Proof of independent work. Projects you owned end to end, open-source contributions, a portfolio, or freelance work with real clients.
- Time zone overlap. Say plainly which hours you can work. 'Available until 9pm IST for overlap with UK mornings' is useful information.
- Reliable setup. A stable internet connection, a backup (such as a mobile hotspot) and a quiet place to work.
Make your application work across borders
- Use a clean, international resume format: no photo, no date of birth, no marital status. See resume formats by country.
- Describe your employers briefly. A foreign recruiter may not know your company: 'Fintech startup, 200 staff, payments for small businesses'.
- State results in numbers that travel: percentages, time saved, users served, rather than amounts that need currency conversion.
- Write a short cover note that mentions your time zone and how you work remotely. Our cover letter generator can give you a first draft to edit.
- Link to proof: a portfolio, GitHub, case studies or published work.
Interviews across time zones
International remote interviews are almost always on video, and often at the edges of your day. A little preparation avoids the usual problems.
- Confirm the time in both time zones in writing, especially around daylight saving changes in Europe and North America.
- Test the video platform the company uses beforehand, with your headset, camera and a backup connection ready.
- Prepare a short, clear way to describe your past employers and products, because the interviewer may not know Indian companies.
- Expect questions about how you work independently: how you plan your week, communicate progress and handle being blocked when your team is asleep. Have concrete examples.
- Practise speaking at a steady pace. Clear, structured answers matter more than accent. Rehearse with mock interview practice.
Salary expectations
Pay for remote roles varies a lot. Some companies pay a single global rate; many adjust pay by location. Research the range for your role and level before you answer salary questions, using real posted pay on the salary explorer, and compare offers properly, including benefits, leave and currency risk, with the job offer comparison tool. Our salary negotiation scripts help with the conversation.
Avoid remote job scams
Remote listings attract scammers. Be wary of 'data entry' or 'product rating' jobs with daily payouts, interviews held only on chat apps, and any request to pay for training, equipment or a 'registration'. Our post on remote job scam patterns walks through the common scripts, and the scam checker can scan any message.
A realistic plan for the next four weeks
- Week 1: pick one target role, update your resume and profile for international readers, and gather proof of your work.
- Week 2: set a remote job alert for that role and apply to roles open to India, in the first days after posting.
- Week 3: practise interviews on video, including explaining your work clearly in English, with mock interview practice.
- Week 4: review what's working. If you're getting no replies, tighten your resume for each posting with the ATS checker.
